Have your cameras ready because today is a huge day. The vistas are breathtaking. We’ll hike to Gorak Shep and eat there for lunch. The best view of Mount Everest without climbing it is from the summit of Kala Pattar (18,190 feet), which we will eventually reach by foot. Spend the night at the lodge.
-
Day 11: Trek to Everest base camp - Gorakshep
We will hike to Everest Base Camp today. It takes three hours to walk to the base camp, and on the way there we will very likely see yaks and porters carrying supplies for the local expeditions. While we are unable to see Mount Everest from Everest Base Camp, we can see the infamous Khumbu Ice Fall, which is thought to be the hardest and most perilous part of the mountain. The Base Camp to Gorak Shep trip takes the same amount of time both ways. We have dinner early so that we may rise early the following morning to take in the breathtaking vistas of the Himalayan giants from Kala Patar. Spend the night in a hotel.
-
Day 12: Trek to Kala Pattar - Pheriche
The following morning, we rise early to make the journey to Kala Pattar (5,643 m), from which we will enjoy a magnificent dawn view. The ascent from the lodge is rather steep, so we set out very slowly and rhythmically. The rocky mountaintop below Pumori is known as Kala Pattar. The trek up is challenging due to the elevation, but the vista is beyond anything you could have imagined. From Gorak Shep, it will probably take around an hour and a half to get to the top. From here, the highest mountains in the world, including Pumori, Nuptse, Changtse, Ama Dablam, Tawache, Kantega, and Everest, surround us. A extremely emotional experience, Kala Patar is worth spending as much time as you’d want in.
-
Day 13: Trek to Pheriche - Tengboche
Today is a pretty short day, and we can now look forward to a drop in altitude and easier walking as we retrace our ascent route after the rigors of the previous few days. Now that the difficult portion is over, you can unwind and focus on the features of mountain life that you might have missed on the trip up. After leaving Pheriche, we cross the Khumbu Khola River, then hike up a short, steep ascent to the top of a small ridge where we can enjoy spectacular views of the Imja Valley, Ama Dablam, and Kantega. After that, we descend to the little towns of Orsho and Shomare, travel through Lower Pangboche, and finally cross the suspension bridge over the Imja Khola River to reach our final destination.
-
Day 14: Trek to Tengboche - Namche Bazaar
Following breakfast, we will ascend through a grove of conifers and rhododendrons to Namchee Bazaar before joining a route that will take us down to the Dudh Koshi River. Arrive in Namchee Bazaar at last.
-
Day 15: Trek to Namche Bazaar - Lukla
Start your final stage of the trip to Lukla at 10 a.m. from Namche. After spending the night in a guesthouse in Lukla, we’ll rise early to catch our flight back to Kathmandu.
-
Day 16: Fly Back to Lukla – Kathmandu
You have a 30-minute flight back to Kathmandu early in the morning. You’ll be taken to your hotel in Kathmandu as you arrive. There is free time for solitary pursuits in the afternoon. In Kathmandu, spend the night in a hotel.
