OVERVIEW

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 175 square kilometers and is located in the eastern Terai region of Nepal. It lies on the Sapt Koshi floodplain and is largely enclosed within the eight-metre-high embankment of the Koshi Dam, designed to mitigate devastating annual flooding. This is a beautiful and fascinating water environment, home to an incredible variety of waterbirds that congregate in ponds filled with flowering plants.

From Kathmandu, the reserve is about 10 hours and 450 km drive along the Mahendra Highway. It is also possible to fly to Biratnagar, from where it is 50 km away by road. The reserve provides important habitat for diverse fauna, especially aquatic birds, including several migratory species such as the Siberian red-crowned crane. In total, 280 different bird species have been recorded, including a variety of ducks, ibis, storks, herons and egrets, as well as marsh grouse and endangered Bengal flower species.

Koshi Tappu is also home to the last remaining herd of wild water buffalo and its other inhabitants include blue cows, many species of deer, Gangetic dolphins and gharial crocodiles.
