OVERVIEW

The trek to Makalu base camp takes you to one of the most remote and unfrequented areas in Nepal. This trek follows the Barun valley which contains some of the last remaining huge protected area. Within this area we will find the Makalu Barun National Park which has been established as Nepal’s eight national park.

From the bottom of the Arun valley near the start of the trek, the mountains rise from just 435m. above sea level to the lofty snow-capped peak of Mt. Makalu at 8463m, world’s fifth highest peak, within a distance of only 40 km. The trek, therefore passes through a wide diversity of ecosystems and cultures.

  • Day 02 : Free day in Kathmandu, hotel BB

Since Nepal began welcoming tourists, Kathmandu, the historical and cultural center of the country, has become a well-liked travel destination. A beautiful fusion of Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, and Western influence can be seen in the city. There will be a guided visit to Boudhanath, the biggest Buddhist stupa in Nepal, and then Pashupatinath, the most well-known Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. We take a journey to Lalitpur, often known as Patan or the City of Artists, which is located 5km from Kathmandu. The architectural marvels of the Malla era are breathtaking as we go through Patan Durbar Square. The main draws in the plaza are the Mahaboudha Temple, Kumbeshwor Temple, Krishna Temple, and Golden Temple.

  • Day 03 : Fly Kathmandu - Tumlingtar & Drive to Num

A flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar at the crack of dawn marks the beginning of our wonderful journey in Nepal. Our trek begins in Tumlingtar, 50 thrilling minutes via flight from Kathmandu. We travel for around three hours by car from Tumlingtar to Num where we spend the night.

  • Day 04 : Trek to Sedua

We proceed past Lumbang’s cornfields as the trail descends sharply from Num. The trail descends extremely steeply through a forest below the village to a suspension bridge over the Arun River (660 m). From the bridge, we go steeply through a field of corn and buckwheat before reaching a crude tea store. We travel up a long, steep, and difficult trail to Sedua (1460m), passing by tiny terraces covered with grain and barley and rocky terrain.

  • Day 05 : Trek to Tashi gaon

After leaving Sedua, we gradually ascent to Gyang (1770m), which is located high above the Kasuwa Khola. It is a leisurely stroll past the Gyang school uphill through terraced fields and forests to Hindrungma village and then on to Rupisa. We travel through meadows and across many streams before climbing to the last permanent Sherpa community in the valley, Tashi Gaon.

  • Day 06 : Trek to Kauma

A little campsite is located on a ridge after we cross the crest and climb through woodlands to reach a stream. The trail becomes level before ascending to a shepherd’s cabin known as Chipla at the top of another ridge. Our ascent takes us through two minor streams, over a ridge through trees to a kharka at 2900 meters, and then up to a saddle and Unshisha, a small meadow at about 330 meters. The trail now connects to the ridge dividing the Kasuwa and Iswa drainages. To reach Dhara Kharka, a meadow at the top of the ridge, the slope becomes steeper and transforms into a flight of moss-covered stone stairs. Once we cross a ridge and begin to descend, we arrive at Kauma (3470 m).

  • Day 07 : Trek to Dobate

Following breakfast, we go on with our ascent to Dobate. Our hiking route climbs as it leads to the summit of Shipton La. Kalo Pokhari, KeKe La, and the Ke Ke La pass are all places we pass through. We finally descend to Dobate Valley, where we will spend the night.

  • Day 08 : Trek to Yangri Kharka

The beginning of our walk today from Dobate is treacherous and steep. Trek should be conducted under the direction and safety precautions of an experienced crew. As you approach Yangri Kharka, the route gradually flattens out. Yangri Kharka has lodging arrangements for the night. Today, we spent a total of about 6-7 hours trekking.

  • Day 09 : Trek to Shershong

Beyond Nhe Kharka, we followed the northern bank of the Barun Khola for a while. We then crossed a small wooden bridge before the river turned north. The Barun Valley forms a giant S-shaped curve and the walls rise almost vertically 1,500 to 2,000 meters above the river, but the trail climbs gently as it approaches Ripok Kharka. Still north of Barun, the trail turns west and leaves the rhododendron forest into the alpine tundra. Above Ripok Kharka, the route crosses a rocky ridge with some Goths, then ascends along a moraine formed by the Barun glacier. There are great views of Pyramid Peak, Peak 4, Chamlang, Peak 3 and Peak 5, but no sighting of Makalu yet. As we crossed a ridge, the glacier turned slightly to the north. We entered an alluvial valley and Makalu appeared just before Sheerson (4615 m). Sheson is somewhat sheltered but still a very cold place. Today was a long hike, about 8 hours.

  • Day 10 : Trek to Makalu Base camp

We continue eastward through a gully on the side of the valley away from Sherson. To get to a small pass, which is 100 meters above Makalu Base Camp, there is a slow descent. The base camp is located on the west bank of the river after we descend to a creek and cross it on boulders. We have fantastic views of Makalu’s south face from here. Across from base camp, the south face’s substantial buttress rises. Peaks 6, 7, and Baruntse (all of which are 7220 meters high) may be seen from this buttress, while Everest and Lhotse round out the vista.

  • Day 11 : Rest day at the Base Camp

Today is a day of rest for exploration and acclimatization.

  • Day 12 : Trek to Yangri Kharka

Today, we go back the way we came and go for Yangri Kharka across the Barun Valley.

  • Day 13 : Trek to Dobate

As we move out from Yangri Kharka, the descent continues as we go through beautiful scenery. at about 6-7 hours, we arrive at Dobate. Staying the night is in Dobate.

  • Day 14 : Trek to Kauma

Trek begins today on a difficult path from Dobate. Today’s hike will last about 5 to 6 hours. We travel through the stunning landscapes of Ke Ke La, Tu Tu La, and Kauma La on our way back to Khongma Danda, where we spend the night.

  • Day 15 : Trek to Sedua

  • Day 16 : Trek to Num

The trail now ascends over steep ridges while passing through forests and along some breathtakingly high, exposed narrow tracks. Before descending to Tome (520 m), the trail passes through a region of heavy valley bottom horticulture, a sizable landslide, and more scrub jungle. The Arun Valley widens and assumes a more U-shaped shape below Tome. On a rocky stairway that is steep and narrow, the trail ascends over another crest. The trail descends to a lovely camp on the banks of the Sankhuwa Khola (370m), across from the Chhetri town of Bumling, from the top of the ridge at 530 meters.

  • Day 17 : Drive to Tumlingtar

Drive to Tumlingtar from Num and spend the night there.
